Aztalan: Mysteries of an Ancient Indian Town
Birmingham, Robert A and Goldstein, Lynne, Wisconsin Historical Historical Society Press, 2006
Birmingham and Goldstein present comprehensive archaeological background for the site of Aztalan (now Aztalan State Park) in southern Wisconsin. They bring together 150 years of archaeological research on a place where Native American visitors from central and southern Illinois settled with local Wisconsin Native Americans 1000 years ago. This frontier town has many of the characteristics of larger villages and towns from the same period in Illinois like Cahokia, but many of its inhabitants also maintained some local traditions suggesting it was a multi-cultural center in a dynamic and fascinating period in Wisconsin’s past.
